Past ¡Adelante! Conference:
Austin ISD is a diverse, urban district that is making great progress in student academic achievement. AISD is the fifth-largest school district in Texas, and serves approximately 86,000 students at 129 schools; the District’s student population has grown by six percent over the past five years. More significantly, the number of English language learners in AISD has grown by 35 percent over that same period—now comprising 29 percent of total enrollment—while the economically disadvantaged component has grown by 15 percent and represents 63 percent of all students. AISD has also experienced a 14-percent rise in the number of Hispanic students, in sharp contrast to a ten-percent decrease in the African American population and five-percent drop among non-Hispanic Whites. With more than 94 home languages reported among student households, Austin ISD teaches in seven languages other than English, including Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and American Sign Language.
Education Austin is the labor union for certified and classified employees of the Austin Independent School District. Created in 1999 from the merger of the NEA-affiliated Austin Association of Teachers (AAT) and the AFT-affiliated Austin Federation of Teachers/Allied Education Workers (AFT/AEW), Education Austin is the first merged local in Texas and is affiliated with the NEA, AFT, TSTA, Texas AFT, and the AFL-CIO. It is by far the largest organization for AISD employees. Education Austin was first elected the consultation agent for AISD employees by the employees themselves in 1999, and was re-elected as consultation agent in 2003 and 2007.
